How Does the Picture-In-Picture Feature on a Samsung LCD Work

How Does the Picture-In-Picture Feature on a Samsung LCD Work?

The Basics
The “Picture in Picture” feature on a Samsung LCD television allows you to display two programs on screen at the same time. One program will be displayed on the full television screen as normal, and the other will be displayed in a smaller square that can be moved around the screen at the user’s discretion. The sound can be switched to come from either the big-screen program or the one on the little screen, but not from both at the same time. This feature requires your model of television to have two TV tuners built inside that work independently of each other. Each tuner is in charge of displaying one of the two video sources.“`

Single-Tuner TVs
Samsung LCD models with only one TV tuner can still utilize the “Picture in Picture” feature, but not in the traditional way a two-tuner model would. The second video source will have to come from some kind of external device, be it a DVD or Blu-ray player. You can, however, add external hardware to be able to see two television programs from single-tuner TVs. You can purchase an external tuner on the Internet or from an electronics retailer and plug that in. Additionally, if your cable box has composite or component outputs, you can hook it up with both these outputs and the standard coaxial cable.

Digital Channels
Even if your Samsung television is a model that supports “Picture in Picture,” this will unfortunately not apply to digital cable channels. If you have a digital cable service, your “Picture in Picture” feature will not work at all unless you are using it to view something from another video source, like a DVD player or a video-game console. The only kind of channels that will be able to utilize the TV tuners in a way that will enable “Picture in Picture” are over-the-air broadcasts that you would receive from an attached antenna or regular analog cable signals.

How to Make a Homemade TV Antenna

How to Make a Homemade TV Antenna
Cable television is expensive. Sometimes if you only want to watch a few local programs, getting a whole cable package would be a waste of money. Thankfully, there is a way that you can watch your favorite TV shows without having to tack on another monthly bill. Making your own TV antenna is a simple procedure that anyone can do with things that are just lying around the house.
Instructions
1
Cut a length of about ten feet of speaker wire. Any type of conductive wire would work, but speaker wire is very flexible and easy to work with.

2
Strip one end of the speaker wire with your wire strippers. You don’t have to expose too much of the metal wires; about an inch will work.

3.Wrap the length of the speaker wire around the metal arts and craft hoop. Go all the way around the hoop, and tie the wire off on the hoop so that it stays in place. Allow yourself a few feet worth of room on the other side with the stripped wire. This will work as your antenna, and using the metal hoop means that you can hang it up anywhere on you walls or entertainment center.

4
Locate the UHF antenna area on the back of your TV. Usually, this will say “UHF” and has a couple of little metal screws right under it.

5
Attach the stripped end of your antenna to the UHF screws on the back of your TV. You will probably need a little flathead screwdriver.

6
Hang your antenna. It’s easier to find a place for your antenna if you turn your TV on, and turned to a channel. This way you can find out what area of your house you can hang the antenna for the best reception.

How to Program a Universal Remote for a Set Top Box

How to Program a Universal Remote for a Set Top Box

A set top box allows television viewers with analog TV sets to view digital broadcasts without having to purchase a new TV. A universal remote can be utilized to control this and other electronic devices that make up a home entertainment system, such as a VCR and/or DVD player. Before you can start using the universal remote to control the set top box (or any device), the remote will need to be programmed to the set top box.

Instructions
1
Turn the set top box on by pressing the “Power” button on that device.

2
Press and hold down the button labeled “Code Search” located on the universal remote for roughly seven seconds.

3.Point the universal remote at the set top box and press the “Aux” button on the remote. If there is no “Code Search” button on the universal remote, hold down the “Aux” button for about seven seconds.

4
Start pressing the “Channel Up” button found on the universal remote. Press the button once every two seconds until the set top box responds by turning off.

5
Press the “Mute” or “#” button located on the universal remote to save the code. Which button you select will vary based on the brand of the universal remote.

6
Test the remote on the set top box. If the universal remote doesn’t control the set top box, repeat the programming process starting at Step 2.

How to Connect Two DTV Antennas

Digital television converter boxes and digital television antennas go hand in hand. With the 2009 conversion of television signals from analog to digital, retail and electronic stores around the country have been selling converter boxes and DTV antennas to keep you from missing your favorite television programs. DTV antennas can receive not only channels from your region or area, but sometimes the antennas can pick up out-of-area channels. To increase the amount of channels your digital television or digital converter box can receive, you can connect two DTV antennas to your television or digital converter box.

Instructions
1
Place one digital television antenna on one end of your television or television cabinet. If using an external digital television antenna, mount the antenna to the highest point on your house (chimney or side of the house). Follow any recommendations found in the manual that came with the antenna.

2
Place the other digital television antenna on the other end of your television or television cabinet. If using an external digital television antenna, mount the antenna on the opposite side of the other highest point on your house (chimney or side of the house). Do not place the antenna close to the other antenna—this will cause interference and your television may not pick up any additional channels.
3.Place the coaxial cable end of the first antenna into one of the two coaxial ports on a coaxial splitter. The splitter will have two coaxial ports on one end and a single coaxial port on the other end.

4
Place the coaxial cable end of the second antenna into the other coaxial port on the coaxial splitter.

5
Place one end of a single coaxial cable into the single coaxial port on the splitter. If you live in an area where television signals are weak or a lot of interference from a power plant or other electrical device is present, proceed to Step 6. Otherwise, skip to Step 8.

6
Plug the other end of the single coaxial cable into the coaxial port on an amplifier.

7
Plug one end of another single coaxial cable into the other coaxial port on the amplifier.

8
Connect the other end of the single coaxial cable into the “Antenna In” jack on the back of your digital converter box. If you don’t have a digital converter box and your television is digital, plug the other end of the single coaxial cable into the “Antenna In” or “Antenna” jack on the back of your television.

9
Turn on your television. Turn on your digital converter box, if one is connected to your television.

10
Press the “Menu” button on your television’s or digital converter box’s remote control.

11
Press “Scan” or “Auto Scan” to re-scan your television or digital converter box so the device can set up any new digital channels the DTV antennas are receiving. The scanning process will end and you can view the added/new channels.

How to Connect a Digital Converter Box With a VCR or DVD Recorder

How to Connect a Digital Converter Box With a VCR or DVD Recorder

A digital converter box works in conjunction with an analog TV to view over-the-air digital TV channels. Without a converter, an analog TV won’t work with a traditional antenna or an “HDTV” antenna. This is because the antennas are basically the same. An older antenna works perfectly well to receive digital signals. The TV itself, or the converter, decodes the signals received by the antenna and produces video.

Instructions
1
Connect the over-the-air antenna into the “Antenna In” on the converter box. This may also be labeled “In” or “Cable” on some boxes.

2
Connect the converter box “Out To TV” port to the VCR or DVD’s “Antenna In” or “Cable In” port. This will send the signal to the VCR from the digital converter box that has an antenna connected to it.

3
Use a second coaxial cable to run from the “Antenna Out” on the VCR to the back of the TV. Follow the converter box instructions to scan for channels.
Tips & Warnings
Be sure to have the converter set to the correct channel to record.

How to Troubleshoot a Sony Grand Wega

How to Troubleshoot a Sony Grand Wega

When you come home from a long day at work, you want to relax in front of the television. You click it on; the screen goes blank. Or the set stays on briefly and then clicks off. These are common problems associated with plasma TVs, and the Sony Wega is no exception. These problems are easy and inexpensive to fix.
Instructions
1
If your Sony Wega will not turn on, the front green light blinks, you hear a faint whirring sound and the green light turns red and flashes, it probably means the lamp inside the set is no longer working. If you noticed the screen beginning to dim in the preceding days or weeks, this most likely is the cause.

2
If the green light flashes and the picture comes on momentarily but then goes off, and the green button flashes until the set restarts, then the seal around the lamp mount is loose and needs to be refitted.

3.If the picture on your Grand Wega cuts in and out and the green standby light flashes, both of the set’s STKs need to be replaced. STKs are small chips on your television’s circuit boards and are identifiable by their labels. The specific STKs used in your Grand Wega TV will be identifiable by the numbered labels on top of the STKs.

4
When you plug in your Sony Wega and hear a loud popping sound, it’s probably caused by a defect in the high-voltage circuit. Let the professionals take care of this one.

5
If, after turning on your Sony Wega, you can hear your set but the screen is black, you most likely need to replace your projection lamp.

How to Fix a No-Disc Error on a DVD Player

How to Fix a No-Disc Error on a DVD Player
Tired of seeing the no-disc error every time you try to watch a movie? No-disc errors are usually caused when the DVD or the laser-lens pickup has become dirty and causes the DVD player to not be able to read the DVD. Follow these steps to find out how to fix a no-disc error on a DVD player.

Instructions
1
Check the disc you’re using for scratches and dirt. If the disc is damaged it won’t play properly, regardless of the DVD player’s ability to function. You can use a DVD repair device like the “Disc Doctor” to repair the DVD or purchase a new DVD.

2
Make sure the discs you’re using fit the correct format specified by your DVD player. For example, if your DVD player doesn’t support home-burned DVD-R’s, then you can’t use a DVD that you made at home. You may need to upgrade to a newer model, most of which accept the latest DVD formats.
3.Clean the laser lens with a DVD laser lens cleaning disc. DVD laser lens cleaning discs can be purchased at most electronics retailers or online. Insert the laser lens cleaning disc and follow the instructions.

4
Insert a correctly-formatted, undamaged disc into your player. Listen to see if it begins to read the disc. If it continues to make no sound and gives you the same message, then the problem is probably that your disc is not spinning in the device.

5
Turn the device off and unplug it. Take off the outer casing by removing the three or four screws and lifting the top piece off. This will allow you to see if anything is simply stuck or jammed. If this is the case, a simple nudge back to the correct position will fix the problem.

6
Clean the lens while the DVD player is open. A dirty lens is most likely the cause of your no-disc error. The lens should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.

7
Take your DVD player to have it professionally fixed only when none of these other solutions solves the problem. A professional repair technician will be able to tell you if fixing your DVD player is worth the money.

How to Get Satellite Television For Free

How to Get Satellite Television For Free
Free-to-air satellite content is unencrypted content available from certain providers. This content does not require a service plan or subscription. Receiving these channels requires an FTA capable satellite dish and receiver. Since the free to air channels are unencrypted, it is perfectly legal for one to receive these channels. A dish moving motor works well as an optional component. The motor lets you easily switch from one satellite to another without physically moving the dish yourself.
Instructions
1
Purchase an FTA receiver, KU-band LNBF, 30″ or larger dish and optionally a dish motor. Open your preferred Web browser and navigate to a satellite calculator such as Dishpointer.com, Satcalc.fridgefta.info or Sat-sales.com/calculator.php. Enter your location for a list of nearby satellites and setup information for each.

2
Install the satellite mounting pole using the information for your location. Use the level to make sure the pole is perfectly straight. If you purchased a dish motor, install it on top of the pole according to the manufacturer instructions.
3.Mount the dish and LNBF on the mounting pole using the adjustable wrench. Use the compass to point it in the direction indicated by the satellite calculator. If you are using a motor, repeat this step for each satellite to record the position in the motor.

4
Run the coaxial cable inside to the receiver. Use the drill if necessary. Make sure the receiver is unplugged before plugging in the cable.

5
Connect the receiver to the television using another coaxial cable. Plug the receiver in and power it on. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to set it up.

6
Check the signal strength and position using the receiver. Repeat for each satellite if you are using a motor. Adjust the position as needed.
