How to Download Information From a Flash Drive to a Computer

With a flash drive, you can transfer files from one computer to another. Flash drives are cross-platform portable hard drives that enable you to store files including documents, music and videos. They vary in memory size and are convenient because of their small size. Whether you are using Windows or Mac OS X, you can transfer files from your flash drive to your computer easily.

Instructions

1
Plug your flash drive into an open USB port on your computer. USB ports may be located on the back, front or side of your computer depending on the model.

2
Click the Windows “Start” menu and click “My Computer” (Windows XP) or “Computer” (Windows 7 and Vista). You should see your flash drive’s icon. If you are using a Mac operating system, you should see the flash drive’s icon on the desktop.

3.Double-click the flash drive icon. You should see the content on your flash drive. To transfer files to your computer, drag them to the folder or location you want to save them to on your computer.

4
Close the flash drive window when you finish transferring files to your computer. Click the “Safely remove hardware” icon on the system tray. Click your flash drive on the hardware window and click “Stop.” When prompted, unplug your flash drive from the computer. If you are using a Mac, safely eject your flash drive by right-clicking its icon on the desktop and clicking “Eject.”

How to Transfer Music From a Flash Drive to an MP3 Player

USB-enabled flash drives provide convenient, space-efficient transport for your MP3 files. Transferring MP3 files from the flash drive to a music player can be as simple as dragging and dropping them from one device icon to the other, provided both devices can connect to your computer simultaneously.

Instructions

1
Insert the USB-enabled flash drive into a USB port on your computer. Wait for your computer to recognize the flash drive as an attached device. The device icon will show up in your computer’s file manager as “My Computer” for Windows or “Finder” for Mac.

2
Connect the USB-enabled MP3 player to another USB port on your computer. Use the MP3 player’s USB connector cable if necessary. Wait for your computer to recognize the MP3 player as an attached device. Otherwise, skip this step and copy the music from your flash drive directly onto your computer’s hard drive until you can connect the MP3 player to your lone USB port.

3.Double-click the flash drive device icon to open its file folder window.

4
Double-click the MP3 player to open its file folder window.

5
Drag and drop the music files from the flash drive’s file folder window to the MP3 player’s file folder window. Many MP3 players support direct file transfers and function as auxiliary storage devices the same way flash drives do.

6
Drag and drop the music files from your flash drive onto your computer desktop or into an easy-to-remember file folder if your MP3 player does not allow or support a direct file transfer. You will also need to perform this step if you only have one USB port. Go back to Step 5 and finish there after completing this step if you own an MP3 player that supports direct file transfers, but only have one USB port available.

7
Open your MP3 player’s file synchronization interface–such as iTunes–and add the music files to its library. Drag and drop the music files onto the synchronization interface’s player window or search them manually from the “Add to Library” option in the menu bar’s “File” tab. Connect your MP3 player to a USB port on your computer if you have not already done so and sync the files to your MP3 player.

How to Make a USB Flash Drive U3 Compliant

A “U3” flash drive comes with special system software programs installed that automatically store all associated data on the drive, for example, text information, pictures or video. To make an ordinary flash drive “U3” compliant, dual partitions must be installed on the flash drive–one duplicating a virtual CD disc and the other open for storage in the usual manner. The procedure is straightforward on a PC and involves loading a modification program from the Sandisk website (the creators of the U3 technology) onto the properly formatted flash drive

Instructions

1
Insert a flash drive in a USB port on the PC. Wait for the flash drive’s icon to appear on the desktop. Right-click on the icon of the flash drive. Select “Properties” from the pop-up menu.

2
Select the “Tools” tab at the top of the window that appears. Click on the “Format” check box. Click on the “Partitions” button to go to a new window. Enter “70” in the percentage field next to the “Partition 1” tab. Enter “30” in the percentage field next to the “Partition 2” tab. Click the “Apply” button to return to the previous window.
Uncheck the “Quick format” check box. Click the “Start” button at the bottom of the window. Wait as a progress bar fills in from left to right. Close the window once the progress bar has completely filled in by clicking the red “X” in the upper-right corner.

4
Go to the Sandisk installer website (see Resources). Click on the “Install Launchpad” link. Select the flash drive’s icon in the window that appears. Click the “OK” button.

5
Follow the menu commands to install the “Launchpad” program onto the flash drive. Click the “OK” button when the installation is completed.

6
Right-click on the icon of the flash drive. Select “Eject” from the pop-up menu. Remove the flash drive from the USB port of the PC.

How to Remove a Security Lock on a USB Flash Drive for a Company Administrator

If the administrator account on your computer has placed a security lock on a USB flash drive connected to your machine, the only way you can remove it is by logging in as that administrator. However, once you are logged in properly (by selecting the “Log Off” option from the “Start” menu and then logging back in under the proper credentials) you can remove the security lock natively in the Windows operating system.
Instructions

1
Click “Start.”

2
Click “Computer.”

3.
Right-click on the USB flash drive you want to unlock. Click “Properties.”

4
Click “Security.” Click “Edit.”

5
Click on the names of the computer user accounts that have been locked out of access to the flash drive in the window on screen. Click “Allow.” By allowing all the user accounts, this will remove the security lock and reset the USB flash drive’s security functions back to their original default settings.

How to Clone a USB Flash Drive

If you have important files saved to your USB flash drive that you want to back up or transfer to another storage location, the best option, in certain cases, is to clone the entire drive. While you can copy the files from the USB drive and paste them onto another drive, this process will usually render some software unusable.

Cloning a USB flash drive is a very straightforward process because all you need is a special software, such as Norton Ghost, to clone the files for you.

Instructions

1
Download Norton Ghost to your computer. Norton Ghost is a disk-cloning software. Follow the onscreen installation guide to install the software.

2
Insert your flash drive. Run Norton Ghost. Click “Ghost Advanced,” then click the “Clone” option.

3.From the “Source” list, select your USB drive. If you are not sure which drive is your flash drive, right-click “Start,” then “Explorer.” Remove your flash drive, wait 30 seconds, then reinsert it. A new drive will appear with a specially designated letter (such as “D:” or “F:”). This is your USB drive. Return to Norton Ghost and select this drive as your source drive.

4
Select from the “Destination” list an empty drive or partition you want to copy the files over to. Review the model name and storage size on the bottom of the “Clone Wizard” screen, if necessary, to figure out which disk you want to use.

5
Click “Next” until you reach the task summary window. Review the information displayed to confirm the settings are correct. If you need to make any changes, click “Back.” Otherwise, click “Run Now” to begin the cloning process.

6
Right-click “Start,” then click “Explorer” after the cloning process is complete. Check your destination drive to make sure all of the files were properly cloned.

Tips & Warnings
Norton Ghost is not freeware and will require purchase after the free trial is over. Free alternatives for disk cloning include EaseUs Disk Copy, XXClone and Runtime Software’s DriveImage XML.

How to Copy a Bootable CD to a USB Flash Disk

Bootable CDs are discs that automatically load or perform a particular function if they are in your computer’s CD drive as the hard drive starts up. For storage and transfer purposes, you may wish to copy a bootable CD onto a USB flash disk. Doing so entails the use of a disk imaging utility. Disk images are exact copies of a drive or disk’s contents combined into a single file that you may readily transfer or use if necessary. On Windows-based computers these images are known as ISO files. They are DMG files on Mac-based computers.

Instructions
Windows
1
Purchase and install a disk imaging utility, such as Nero Burning ROM, MagicISO or Acronis True Image (see Resources), if you do not already have a program of this nature.

2
Insert the bootable CD into your computer’s CD drive.

3.Launch your disk imaging utility if you have not already done so. Select “Disk Image” or “Bootable CD/DVD Image” from the “File” menu’s “New” tab.

4
Select your bootable CD’s drive icon from the ensuing file browser or from the utility’s browser pane. Drag and drop the drive icon to the utility’s ISO panel if it has not automatically loaded there upon selection.

5
Click the “Save” button or select “Save” from the “File” menu. Name the file and select a save destination on your computer if you wish this to differ from the default location.

6
Insert the USB flash disk into an available USB port on your computer. Wait for your computer to recognize the USB flash disk as a connected device. Open the flash disk’s file folder from Windows Explorer.

7
Click “Start” and open the file folder containing the newly created ISO file in a separate Windows Explorer window. Ignore this step if you saved the file onto your computer’s desktop.

8
Drag the ISO file from its window into that of the USB flash disk and drop it on the USB flash disk icon. Doing so creates a copy of the bootable CD’s disk image file on your USB flash disk.

Mac OS X
9
Insert your bootable CD into the computer’s CD drive.

10
Launch Disk Utility from the “Applications” folder.

11
Select the bootable CD from the list of drives and volumes in the left pane.

12
Select “New” from the “File” menu. Select “Disk image from disk name.”

13
Name the disk image and select its save destination from the ensuing dialog.

14
Choose “DVD/CD master” from the list of available disk image formats.

15
Click “Save” to create the disk image.

16
Insert the USB flash disk into an available USB port on your computer.

17
Double-click the USB flash drive’s device icon from your computer’s desktop. Doing so opens its file folder in Finder.

18
Open the file folder containing the newly created disk image in a separate Finder window. Ignore this step if you saved the disk image to your desktop.

19
Drag and drop the disk image file into the USB flash disk’s file folder. Doing do creates a copy of the bootable CD’s disk image on your USB flash disk.
