In order to simplify the licensing process, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has categorized vehicles in different categories. To drive a particular kind of vehicle, an individual needs to ensure that he is entitled on his driving licence to drive the same.

Mopeds

Mopeds are light motor vehicles that have been categorized into three different categories as given below:

  1. Category AM:

An individual who owns 2-wheeled or 3-wheeled vehicles that have maximum design speed of over 25km/h (15.5mph) but not more than 45km/h (28mph) falls under this category. The category also includes light quad bikes.

  1. Category P

An individual is eligible to drive 2-wheeled vehicles that have design speed ranging between 45km/h (28mph) and 50km/h (31mph). The engine size must not be more than 50cc, if powered by an internal combustion engine.

  1. Category Q

An individual who owns 2-wheeled vehicles that have engine size of not more than 50cc (if powered by an internal combustion engine) and a maximum design speed of not more than 25km/h (15.5mph) falls under Category Q.

Motorcycles:

An individual needs to obtain any of the three entitlements on his driving licence as per the motorcycle he owns:

  1. Category A1:

This entitlement gives an individual the right to drive light motorbikes with an engine size up to 125cc, a power output of up to 11kW and a power to weight ratio of not more than 0.1kW/kg. The motor tricycles with power output up to 15kW are also included in this category.

  1. Category A2:

With this entitlement, an individual is allowed to drive motorbikes that havepower output up to 35kW and power to weight ratio is not more than 0.2kW/kg. He/she can also drive motorbikes that falls under category A1.

  1. Category A:

An individual can drive motorbikes that have more than 35kW of power output or a power to weight ratio above 0.2kW/kg and motor tricycles with a power output more than 15kW. He/she can also drive motor bikes that fall under the categories A1 and A2.

Light vehicles and quad bikes

The light vehicle and quad bike owner need to have any of the following entitlements on their driving licence:

  1. Category B1:

This entitlement is required for driving 4-wheeler motor vehicles of up to 400kg unladen or 550kg if they’re designed for carrying goods.

Cars

Category B

Following vehicles are allowed under this category:

  1. Vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).
  2. Tow heavier trailers if the total MAM of the vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500kg.
  3. Motor tricycles with a power output above 15kW, if the driver is over 21 years old.

Finding Averages of the A.P.

Average of an A.P. and Corresponding terms of the A.P.
Consider the A.P., 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22. If you try to find the average of these six numbers you will get: Average = (2 + 6 + 10 + 14 + 18 + 22)/ 6 = 12 Notice that 12 is also the average of the first and the last terms of the A.P. In fact, it is also the average of 6 and 18 (which correspond to the second and 5th terms of the A.P.). Further, 12 is also the average of the 3rd and 4th terms of the A.P.
(Note: In this A.P. of six terms, the average was the same as the average of the 1st and 6th terms. It was also given by the average of the 2nd and the 5th terms, as well as that of the 3rd and 4th terms. )
We can call each of these pairs as “CORRESPONDING TERMS” in an A.P.
What you need to understand is that every A.P. has an average.
And for any A.P., the average of any pair of corresponding terms will also be the average of the A.P.
If you try to notice the sum of the term numbers of the pair of corresponding terms given above:
1st and 6th (so that 1 + 6 = 7)
2nd and 5th( hence, 2 + 5 = 7)
3rd and 4th (hence, 3 + 4 = 7)
Note that: In each of these cases, the sum of the term numbers for the terms in a corresponding pair is one greater than the number of terms of the A.P.
This rule will hold true for all A.P.s.
For example, if an A.P. has 23 terms then for instance, you can predict that the 7th term will have the 17th term as its corresponding term, or for that matter the 9th term will have the 15th term as its corresponding term. (Since 24 is one more than 23 and 7 + 17 = 9 + 15 = 24.)
3. Process for finding the sum of an A.P.
Once you can find a pair of corresponding terms for any A.P., you can easily find the sum of the A.P. by using the property of averages:
i.e. Sum = Number of terms ¥ Average.
In fact, this is the best process for finding the sum of an A.P. It is much more superior than the process of finding the sum of an A.P. using the expression n(2a +( n– 1) d)/2.
4. Finding the common difference of an A.P., given 2 terms of an A.P.
Suppose you were given that an A.P. had its 3rd term as 8 and its 8th term as 28. You should visualize this A.P. as – , – , 8 , – , – , –, – , 28. From the above figure, you can easily visualize that to move from the third term to the eighth term, (8 to 28) you need to add the common difference five times. The net addition being 20, the common difference should be 4.
Illustration: Find the sum of an A.P. of 17 terms, whose 3rd term is 8 and 8th term is 28.
Solution: Since we know the third term and the eighth term, we can find the common difference as 4 by the process illustrated above. The total = 17 ¥ Average of the A.P.
Our objective now shifts into the finding of the average of the A.P. In order to do so, we need to identify either the 10th term (which will be the corresponding term for the 8th term) or the 15th term (which will be the corresponding term for the 3rd term.)
Again: Since the 8th term is 28 and d = 4, the 10th term becomes 28 + 4 + 4 = 36.
Thus, the average of the A.P. = Average of 8th and 10th terms = (28 + 36)/ 2 = 32.
Hence, the required answer is sum of the A.P. = 17 ¥ 32 = 544.
The logic that has applied here is that the difference in the term numbers will give you the number of times the common difference is used to get from one to the other term.
For instance, if you know that the difference between the 7th term and 12th term of an AP is –30, you should realize that 5 times the common difference will be equal to –30. (Since 12 – 7 = 5).
Hence, d = – 6.

Understanding the logical aspects about Arithmetic Progressions is likely to help you solve questions based on APs in the context of an aptitude exam like GRE.

CAT preparation tips to improve LR and DI sections

Aspiring for CAT 2015? Make sure you work really hard to improve Logical Reasoning (LR) and Data Interpretation (DI) as sections. DI and LR section in CAT exam paper comprises of 32 questions each. If you screw up this section, you may not be able to score high in CAT. Given below are some tips to help you improve DI and LR to get high CAT percentile.

Solve previous year CAT papers. A lot of people who have been able to crack the CAT exam successfully would have told you the same. Even your coaching center tutors would have asked you to do the same. This is something that you can’t ignore if you want to crack the CAT exam. CAT papers would familiarize you with the kind of questions that are asked and the level of difficulty that you can expect in the actual paper. You can easily get previous year papers either online for free, or you can buy a book that comprises of previous year’s solved CAT papers.

When you solve previous year CAT papers and when you appear for CAT mock tests, analyse. Generally DI is not very difficult, but it is very time consuming. LR can sometimes take too much time or you may not get the logic at all. Make categories of problem types in each of these sections and then identify which ones you are comfortable with and which ones you are not so comfortable. This will help you know which are the ones you need to work more on. Some such categories that most students find difficult are cubes, rankings, arrangements, table based LR sets, games, set theory based questions. Line and bar charts, pie charts, and table based are difficult in the DI section.

Work on your speed. You must be really quick at calculations of you want to solve all the questions on time and correctly. Try to do calculations mentally. Learn squares at least till 30, cubes at least till 20, and square roots till 10. Also learn fractions to percentage conversions. These would help you speed up your calculations and would save a lot of your time. Do approximate calculations wherever it works. Since CAT is not a subjective exam, you just have to tick the right answer.

Practice. It may sound a cliché though but it is actually very important if you want to crack CAT exam 2015. Do not practice anything and everything. Work on the weak question types that you have identified during your CAT preparation. Practice as many questions as possible to improve your speed further. The more you work on the weak questions, the better you will get.

Keep the above CAT preparation tips in mind and score well in CAT exam.

An Introduction of Reverse Osmosis

Almost everyone is aware by the process of reverse osmosis. It is now being widely used in various commercial and industrial sectors. The usage of the RO is being patronized in not only the industries but also at homes. The basic working behind it is that it works on the simple principle of flowing of liquid from higher concentration to the lower concentration through a semi permeable membrane.

The solution which consists of various impurities is subjected to high pressure due to which the molecules with lower molecular weight passes through the semi permeable membrane while the one with higher molecular weight are restricted by it. The water used for commercial and industrial purposes needs high rate of purity. Thus, a mechanism which can operate the pressure between 100 to 100 psig is set up. Many industries increase the number of membranes while using it because they need the water of greater quality.

Moreover many of the RO systems have the technology of crossflow of the water which keeps the semi permeable membrane clean without taking any extra efforts. The system was invented in the 1950’s for achieving purified water. It removes salt, color, taste and various other contaminants from the water very easily. These days’ different industries are using the technology of reverse osmosis immensely. Basic reason behind the wide use of reverse osmosis system is that it is very efficient as well as cost effective.
