Why you shouldn’t run your PC as Administrator.
I had some down time as some of you may have noticed. A recent incident brought to my attention something that never occurred to me before. Why you should not run your PC as administrator. I thought I must be the administrator because I couldn’t download or uninstall any program without it.
What happened? Well, I’m not really sure except I had all my networks open and was in twitter feeding down to my networks and all of a sudden I had two and three posts of the same posts on each network. I always check my links to make sure they are good. I checked a link on this peculiar post and it came up RED. SPAMMER RED! I freaked. I’m deleting as fast as I can. Back and forth from one network to another.
When it happened. WHAT? I still don’t know who’s responsible and probley never will. First it froze up and then it started shutting down and finally it showed my log in page and said “COMPUTER LOCKED".” My computer was locked up by someone on the outside!
I went though my pc very thoroughly trying to figure out just how anyone could do that with my firewall and security. I didn’t care how long it took, so I took my time. :)
I was running my PC as administrator with a password. Now mind you I have had my computer seen by a fix it guy and HE never said a word. He repairs and reprograms computers for a living. So why didn’t he tell me? I reckon it’s because he wanted more work!
If you want to know anything about Windows, Ask Windows forums. I couldn’t find the answer any other way. The question.
“Is it safe to run my computer as administrator with a password?
Reply:
No! There is several fundamentals;
1.) for non-administrative tasks use Standard user account (as regular user)
2.) use complex passwords
3.)use firewall and configure it to block all incoming connections except really necessary services.
4.) use windows update
5.) as necessary update all your client software.
6.) you may configure Software Restriction Policy or Applocker.
Well! Here I am with 300 feeds for material and not to mention my other live feeds. I hate to say it, but who ever did it, did it to bring that to my attention I know this because if they intended to harm I would not be using this PC right now.
So… lesson learned but what a pain. I had to change everything. But like mom has always said “ If it don’t kill you, It’ll make you stronger.” I set up a account for administrator and changed my account to user. Now , I get a pop-up to tell me I’m not authorized to make changes and I have to go the extra mile to get it done. I hope that will keep hackers out. I thought I’d let you know. I don’t bank online so they wouldn’t find anything to steal anyway. I just don’t want to EVER go through that again.
