The Women’s Small Business Start-Up Kit by Peri Pakroo is one of the best How-To business books I’ve ever read. It was so full of tips and instructions that I didn’t feel that I had to go to any other source. I’ve always thought that Nolo’s Business books were very useful, but with this one they have definitely surpassed themselves. I would recommend this to anyone even thinking about starting their own small business and in this uncertain economy, small business owners need all the help they can get. Kudos to Nolo and the author and thanks! (Pam Headrick AThirstyBlog.com 20100501)

Let’s Get Unbalanced: Digging into Work post by Peri Pakroo: Work-life balance consistently ranks near the top of concerns for self-employed women. With kids in the mix, balance can be even more elusive. But sometimes the challenge isn’t maintaining balance but finding a way to throw it to the wind (for a while). (Mamapedia voices, www.mamapedia.com )
The Women’s Small Business Start-Up Kit: A Step-by-Step Legal Guide

Pakroo, an attorney and small-business expert, plumps up her earlier book, The Small Business Start-Up Kit: A Step-by-Step Legal Guide (6th ed., 2010), by adding material that focuses on the unique needs of women entrepreneurs. Both books offer solid advice on crafting a business plan, designing a marketing strategy, choosing the appropriate legal structure, handling employment ssues, and working with legal and financial professionals. In this new volume, Pakroo adds an opening chapter on work/life balance that discusses working with spouses, mixing business and children, and designing a business structure compatible with career and family goals. She covers the challenges of home-based businesses; considers financial, tax, and health-care considerations for women; and provides a list of agencies that serve women in business. There are tips, anecdotes, and practical insights from a number of accomplished women entrepreneurs on such topics as business travel with children and creative ways to reduce child care costs. The accompanying CD includes extended interviews and a collection of financial forms and worksheets. (Joan Pedzich, Harris Beach PLLC, Rochester, NY Library Journal )

Product Review.

Some people may be wondering, “Why ‘Women’?” After all, it’s about starting a small business. Are the differences for women really enough to justify a separate book?

After reading through Pakroo’s book, I think the answer to this is, “Yes.” As she explains in the introduction (paraphrased): “There are business basics that apply to men and women alike: writing a business plan, handling finances, getting a website, etc.. But there are also women-specific topics: government contracts for women, identifying yourself as a woman-owned business and using it to financial advantage, plus interviews (on the CD) with women who’ve succeeded as entrepreneurs.”
The Women’s Small Business Start-Up Kit: A Step-by-Step Legal Guide

She points out that this is not really a book of “inspiration” (although her enthusiasm for women-as-entrepreneurs” is a bit inspiring in itself. She wants readers to know her emphasis is really on successfully starting and running a business–in other words, realistic, factual, practical help, including pros and cons (like health insurance coverage). The discussion of the pros and cons of running a business from home was useful–particularly the reminder of how many things are deductible even if your home office doesn’t qualify for federal deduction.
The Women’s Small Business Start-Up Kit: A Step-by-Step Legal Guide

And then there is marketing. Lots of good ideas here, both in the “real” world and using various opportunities online. (The website information, in my opinion, needs work. The nuts and bolts of web authoring are missed–why no mention of Dreamweaver?–and there’s a lack of clarity in who would be able to create the website, update it, and maintain it. I really thought this section was a good idea, but poorly executed. The section on financial accountability was better.

There is tax advice at the end, and a CD with some forms that could help new businesses set up a partnership and maintain their books and stay organized. All-in-all, I wouldn’t call it a “Step by step legal guide”, but there’s a lot of good information and it’s a very solid overview that would help a new businesswoman know what to prepare for and to troubleshoot some of the problems enough to avoid them–always a good thing.

Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America.

Can girls play softball? Can girls be school crossing guards? Can girls play basketball or ice hockey or soccer? Can girls become lawyers or doctors or engineers?

Of course they can…

today. But just a few decades ago, opportunities for girls were far more limited, not because they weren’t capable of playing or didn’t want to become doctors or lawyers, but because they weren’t allowed to. Then quietly, in 1972, something momentous happened: Congress passed a law called “Title IX,” forever changing the lives of American girls.
Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America
Hundreds of determined lawmakers, teachers, parents, and athletes carefully plotted to ensure that the law was passed, protected, and enforced. Time and time again, they were pushed back by Þerce opposition. But as a result of their perseverance, millions of American girls can now play sports. Young women make up half of the nation’s medical and law students, and star on the best basketball, soccer, and softball teams in the world. This small law made a huge difference.

From the Sibert Honor-winning author of Six Days in October comes this powerful tale of courage and persistence, the stories of the people who believed that girls could do anything — and were willing to fight to prove it.
Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America
Editorial Review.

Starred Review. Grade 7 Up -A fascinating look at the birth, growth, stagnation, and final emergence of Title IX. While acknowledging the controversy surrounding this law, the author is unwaveringly supportive of its passage and implementation. Interesting and easy-to-follow chapters highlight the process of creating, revising, fighting for, and ultimately passing this legislation that gave girls and women equal access to physical-education classes, gymnasiums, universities, and graduate schools. Human-interest stories personalize the issues, and photographs of congresswomen fighting for equal opportunities for girls, women demonstrating, and the ultimate victory-a woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated-show how challenging, yet ultimately rewarding, the battle has been. Charts depict amazing statistics about the increase in athletic participation by females from 1970 to 2001. Cartoons show the humorous but painfully true attitudes of our culture toward women as they have strived to achieve equality in this country. The book closes with a “Then and Now” section highlighting the changes Title IX has brought about. Lynn M. Messina’s Sports in America (H. W. Wilson, 2001) and Victoria Sherrow’s Encyclopedia of Women and Sports (ABC-CLIO, 1996) both offer bits of information, but nothing out there comes close to Blumenthal’s portrait of the emergence of women athletes in our society.-Julie Webb, Shelby County High School, Shelbyville, KY
Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America
From Booklist

Gr. 6-9. As in Six Days in October (2002), a compelling overview of the 1929 stock market crash and a financial primer, Wall Street Journal editor Blumenthal uses specific facts and fascinating personal stories to give readers a wide view of history. Here, the author looks at American women’s evolving rights by focusing on the history and future of Title IX, which bans sex discrimination in U.S. education. Profiles of groundbreaking female athletes and legislators deftly alternate with highlights of the women’s movement, from the early twentieth century through today. The dull paper stock diminishes the many black-and-white photos, but the images are still gripping, and relevant political cartoons and fact boxes add further interest. Few books cover the last few decades of American women’s history with such clarity and detail, and this comprehensive title draws attention to the hard-won battles, the struggles that remain, and the chilling possibility that rights, if not fiercely protected, can easily be lost.

Product Review 1.

A great overview of a law that changed womens’ lives.

Karen Blumenthal’a latest young-readers’ book, LET ME PLAY is a behind-the-scenes look at how Title IX changed the cultural landscape for American women.

Just because this book is intended for a younger audience does not make it simplistic reading. I consider myself pretty informed about political and social topics, yet I had little idea that Title IX does not just cover equality in sporting opportunities. Title IX, the brainchild of late Congresswoman Edith Green, actually mandates that schools may not limit the educational opportunities of students based on gender–and that includes admissions policies and access to classes. Title IX is the reason that half of all law students and medical students today are women.
Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America
What a huge change from the early 1960s, the era in which Blumenthal opens the book with a description of swimmer Donna De Verona. The 13-year-old swimmer, long denied opportunities to participate in other sports she loved, finally decided to become a swimmer. Not only did she excel, but she became the most decorated high school swimmer in the United States. She won two Olympic gold medals and the adoration of the press. Then she graduated, and…nothing. No scholarships, no endorsements, no interest. Here was an 18-year-old brimming with talent and she hit a dead end because there simply were no rewards for women athletes.
Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America
At the time De Verona was facing her bleak future, women all over the country were confounded by colleges that had strict admissions quotas. Many schools refused to enroll women in science and math classes. And legislators could get away with citing the need for “delicate” females to leave educational spaces open for men, who would be the “breadwinners.”
Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America
Things changed, and they changed quickly. A little too quickly for institutions such as Harvard University, which comes off poorly in this book. These stodgy and hidebound schools tried their hardest to keep women from upsetting their little alumni-donation applecart (women alumni were said not to give money to the colleges). Coaches went ballistic when they realized they’d have to share space and dollars with female athletes. And shrill voices predicted shared locker rooms and the end of the feminine mystique.
Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America
But then came Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs and the famous “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match. It captured the imagination of the nation and a generation was galvanized to not allow women second-class status any longer.

Now, here we are in 2005 and the world has changed for the better. Title IX is still controversial with football coaches and a few other macho types who’d like all the money and attention focused on men. But America has taken to female soccer players (Mia Hamm), tennis favorites (the Williams sisters), basketball players (too many to mention) and also with female doctors and lawyers. It’s all part of the current cultural landscape and there’s no going back.
Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America
Blumenthal does a great job bringing the law to life by providing mamny break-out boxes with stories of female athletes and legislators that made a difference. Would you believe Caspar Weinberger, Richard Nixon’s conservative head of the old department of Health, Education and Welfare, was instrumental in getting Title IX signed and implemented? Can you believe that Nixon signed it? All these stories are true and come to vivid life in Blumenthal’s straightforward style of storytelling.
Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX: The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America
She doesn’t pull any punches and she shouldn’t have to. What was unfair needed to be rectified. Today’s kids who are growing up in a nearly egalitarian society need to know that they are standing on the shoulders of some pretty courageous and forward-thinking human beings.

I recommend that if you have a daughter, niece, grandchild, little sister, or just that cute neighbor girl down the street, this book would make an excellent addition to her library.

Editorial Review.

Neither a hands-on investment manual nor a basic introduction to investing, Kansas’s book straddles the divide between those two extremes, but has trouble finding a comfortable spot. Kansas tries too hard to reach casual readers, as when he compares the New York Stock Exchange to a lemonade stand or a trading specialist to a traffic cop, two simple analogies that give way to a stream of jargon and technical details that may overwhelm readers unfamiliar with big finance. Luckily, Kansas never strays far from the wry humor he uses to enliven the finer points. For example, in a discussion of the high risks of venture capital, Kansas writes, “Venture capital is a lot as its name applies, though one is tempted to place ‘ad’ before ‘venture.'” The book isn’t afraid to wade into controversies such as Henry Blodgett’s questionable stock recommendations, and at its best it feels as though an experienced financial journalist is gossiping with the reader over drinks. As its title suggests, this book is a primer, providing backgrounds on every major type of investment or financial activity, with a pleasing economy of style that incorporates sidebars for people seeking more in-depth information on how to read stock listings or the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The ideal reader of this book isn’t a total financial novice, but readers with an at least cursory understanding of trading, investments and economics will find Kansas’ book a rewarding read.

The Essential Guide to Motorcycle Maintenance: Tips & Techniques to Keep Your Motorcycle in Top Condition

Product Review 1.

wow where do i begin. first off im a student at mmi (motorcycle mechanics institute)which has campuses in both phoenix and orlando. i bought this book to supplement my education and honestly it was a great purchase. its very easy to read and understand the first time through whether or not you have previous motorcycle knowledge of which i had none or you are experienced in mechanics. the theory section is an absolute must and just as thorough as the notes i received at mmi. the photos are great much better than youd find in your average factory manual and if you have no mechanical experience forget about trying to read one of those. factory manuals are written for “seasoned” techs. mark zimmermans book is written for both the average joe biker or someone with plenty of experience. he even takes the time to put in tips such as “what to do when you strip a bolt”, “how to torque a bolt” and much more. overall im very impressed i have yet to find a section that i felt was inadequate. other books i have found dance around the subjects and dont give you the information you need. this book hits the nail on the head everytime…..thanks mark

Product Review 2 .

I’ve had no real initiative to understand how motors work until recently purchasing a bike. Part of this is born out of wanting to avoid overpaying local service people for work that truly may not be done well or completely. This book does a wonderful job at laying out the theories and the practicalities of every subdivision of motorcycle mechanics, w/ extremely helpful multi-color pictures everywhere, including many step by step photos.
The Essential Guide to Motorcycle Maintenance: Tips & Techniques to Keep Your Motorcycle in Top Condition

I was able to change out my brake lines after I read the chapter on braking- I actually understood hydraulic brakes, and successfully did a job in an afternoon w/ hand tools that would’ve cost me hundreds.

The author’s enthusiasm is contagious, and I’m finding that this book is part of a growing impulse to spend as much time as possible with my toolbox and my Ducati. Highly recommended for the novice or the expert!

Product Review 3.

This book was well thought out and goes through a logical procession of maintenance/repair items. Some typo/grammatical errors dispersed throughout the book, but not enough to lead the reader astray. What I thought best were some of the items covered that I never would have thought of as needing maintenance, much less being VERY important (ie., steering head bearings) – and I have been riding for nearly 30 years! This book almost makes you WANT to get dirty and dive into repairing your bike. Even if you don’t do your own maintenance, this book alerts you to issues that should be addressed by your mechanic, and allows you to be a much smarter motorcycle ‘consumer’.

This is a good visual manual. It is full of pictures and information on the bikes and models made in that time frame. I hate my local Honda dealer, so I’m happy to go to any length to not go there. When I had them diagnose a $1200 repair bill I immediately went for this book and got started. I replaced the front and back brakes and rotors, the starter and power steering pump. They were all fairly easy with the directions given, except that this book does NOT have a diagram for the serpentine belt, so if you take the belt off to replace anything powered by the drive shaft you had better remember where it goes. Or search google for it.
I also found it funny that when I looked up replacing the motor mount it basically said if you’re not an expert mechanic, go pay one to fix it, ’cause this isn’t easy. Needless to say, the car is still shaking a little but I won’t be sending it to the dealer.

Product Review 2.

This manual is not meant to perform more than just a few jobs since the cheap, crappy paper they use is reminiscent of the toilet paper used in Germany in the 80’s. Easily torn and very absorbent so the pages soil quickly. Information is good but they could provide a little more detail, especially in the illustrations, which are poor at best. Since it is supposed to be for the home mechanic, it might be nice to rate some of the jobs between easy and difficult, but I won’t rate it down for that. What this manual did for me was convince me that I should have a pro do the job, and that saved me the frustration of starting a job I couldn’t finish.

These Haynes Manuals are awesome. They go through repair procedures step by step withHonda Accord 2003-2007 (Haynes Repair Manual)
illustrations. Whenever I buy a car, I also buy the appropriate Haynes Manual. With mechanic labor rates up to $100 or more per hour through a dealer or an auto shop, you can save alot with this relatively inexpensive manual.

Product Review 1.

This is an excellent book. The majority of the questions I saw on the exam were the exact questions in the book. If you can master the questions in the book through reading the explanations and identifying your weak spots, there’s no reason not to pass the test. In fact, if you go through the entire book, there’s no reason to not ace the exam. Also, the computer testing supplement that comes with the book is exactly the same as that given to you at the time you take the exam, so you’ll already be familiar with the charts you need to understand, the figures you’ll need to refer to, and the different maps you will be referred to on the test. I’m glad I bought it.

I’ve started out using the Gleim study books in 2011 and really liked them. I got This AOPA Prep test for the 2012 version. It is good and covers everything with detachable workbook(nice option). It also tells you why other answers are not correct. I would give it a 4.5 out of 5. AOPA is a top notch group, they have helped me get my medical and purhcase a plane. AOPA is the BEST!

Studying is a lot easier with this book. One book covers multiple aircraft. Chapters are broken down into areas that they are on the FAA test. Questions are actual test items along with reason each answer is coreect/incorrect. Highly recomment this book.
