(A Global Red Hot Best Seller) Android Netrunner: The Card Game.

61qefx9qBCL._SL1000_Best customizable game around,

I’m beyond thrilled at the revival of such a great game (in the wonderful living card game format, to boot!). Having played a ton of customizable games, (especially ccgs and lcgs), I’d say that Richard Garfield’s Netrunner is easily the best designed and most skill testing game in the genre — hands down better designed than the still excellent Magic: The Gathering (Richard Garfield’s first take in the genre).

One reason the game is so skill-testing is the sheer volume of little decisions one can make. In Magic, one has to draw a card at the beginning of one’s turn. In Netrunner, the runner can choose to draw cards, or instead gain credits to pay for stuff, or instead perform actions. This flexibility greatly reduces the variance arising from the random distribution of cards in the deck. Whereas in Magic you can easily not draw lands and die, or in Vs System not draw the right characters and just flat die, in Netrunner you have far more control over the tradeoff between resources. Furthermore, there is an incredible amount of bluffing and mind gaming, so that just as in poker, quite often you’re playing the cards and the other player more than the cards are playing you.

The game is so skill-testing that you can take any two decks that are in the remote ballpark of equal power level, and a significantly better player will win virtually every game, no matter which side they play. This is not true of a game like Magic, where the higher variance lets weaker players win sometimes (It really isn’t bad, of course).

The minor changes introduced in the Android version are mostly reasonable. The introduction of factions adds some interesting texture to game play and deck-building. On the whole I like the new art more than the old, though they’ve unfortunately added some of the female objectification so predominant in fantasy art. The changes in terminology are superficial, though weird in terms of flavor. For example, how can a hacker accrue roughly the same amount of “credits” as a huge mega-corporation? It made more sense to me when they were called “bits”. But again, that’s flavor that doesn’t affect game mechanics, so for many people the terminology is unimportant. The only change I really don’t like (or perhaps just haven’t got used to) is the reworking of the trace mechanic, insofar as the blind-bidding of old added some interesting strategy. Furthermore, the fact that trace and link can be arbitrarily increased seems (at least in the games I’ve played) to reduce the game-impact of resources and hardware that increase the runner’s link. In the context of the current rules, why would you even play a card that does nothing but give you +1 link? It seems so weak that it it’s not worth a card. Though perhaps I just haven’t adjusted my thinking to the new mechanic properly. These are minor changes though — the game is largely identical to the older version.

If you like very skill-testing strategy games with a touch of variance and a lot of mind-games, incomplete information, and bluffing, then there’s a good chance you’ll love this game.

Cards Against Humanity (A Global #1 Red Hot Best Seller)

51RD-Lha01L._SL1023_Great game for people who usually don’t play card games, for situations when you are more in the mood for conversation,

“Cards Against Humanity” is a funny card game that is basically about judging whether to choose black question or give the blank white card. Each player has ten cards at the start of each round and gives them to the card master. The card master will decide which of the cards is funniest considering the question or fill-in-the-blank white card as well.

The player who submitted the chosen card would receive the question card that represents one “Awesome Point”. When each round finish, the card master will become next player and game can continue as long as the players want it.

Besides that game offers a gambling option to win additional point in a way if a question is played which one player believes she/he has two possible winning answers she/he can gamble with one Awesome Point and in case of winning besides retaining gambled point get additional Awesome Point. If lost ore there some “Pick 2” question cards that require each player to submit two cards in order to complete their answer.

This deceptively simple game provides many interesting and funny situations, and it is extremely fun to play, especially in the larger group of friends or family.

What is certain is that you will endlessly laugh and it’s also great for people who usually don’t play card games and for situations when you are more in the mood for conversation, and less for the playing games.

You Should Purchase This Immediately,

My wife and I had a few people over last evening for game night. We started the night with Scattergories and a liberal dosing of alcohol. When we were sufficiently lubricated we turned our attention to C.A.H. Unfortunately I had the make-it-yourself version, which involved $7, Kinkos and an hour with a pair of scissors.

I don’t know if it was the booze, the cards, or the fact that I was playing with a bunch of great people with minds just as twisted as mine, but I have never laughed that much before in my life. Ever. Honest to goodness pounding the table, falling on the floor laughing. (I did indeed fall over on the floor. But just once.) We spent probably two hours working our way through the entire deck.

The only downside that I see is that while I’m sure future playings will be fun, some of the hilarity is the shock value of seeing things for the first time. Many times one of us would peek at a new card just drawn and collapse into a laughing fit for thirty seconds or so. While “Jerking off into a pool of childrens’ tears” and “A Gassy Antelope” will always be amusing, I don’t know if anything could top last night.

I will definitely be playing again, and when I do so, I would love to have an actual production deck to play with. While the make-at-home version totally works, the cards are small and a little rough around the edges from shoddy scissorwork. Do yourself a favor and buy the real thing.

Good Deal
This is a extremely bargain. The new PS3 is nice, it’s therefore small. I purchased this bundle to switch my 60gb PS3 that recently failed on me. This new console is quiet, tiny and works similar to the other playstation. There are not any new options therefore i do not see a requirement to upgrade your recent PS3 however if you’re within the marketplace for a brand new PS3 it’s nice.

Assassin’s Creed three is superb, I even have compete it for some hours currently and every one I will say is wow. This game extremely is worth of the three moniker. Brotherhood and Revelations felt like enlargement packs for AC2, however this game is that the true evolution of the series.

I selected this bundle since I required a replacement Playstation and that i was coming up with on obtaining AC3 and that i saved $10 off the value of AC3 this manner and that i managed to urge a bigger hard drive still. The 500gb ought to be nice, my 60gb was full and that i had to perpetually delete and re-download a number of my games to manage house.

Product Review 1.

This is perhaps one of the most legendary RPG games to ever grace a system and one of the rarest games to buy or possess. You have to try this game atleast once if you are an RPG fan or even if you are a fan of games in general. It’s storyline is very unique and at times is never afraid to make fun of itself as an RPG in dialogue. What also is a special treat above all else is the battle system in it’s time redifined most games, instead of walking 5 steps and you are in a battle(like Final Fantasy etc etc) the enemy tries to run and touch you to initiate battle, once battle is commenced the background is different and morphs itself every 3 seconds which i can safely say has not been done in most games and sometimes during attacks can be funny due to the fact that some enemies either are afraid to attack, or just grin instead of attacking which creates witty dialogue.
In my personal opinion Earthbound is a timeless game, that has slipped into obscurity and has gathered a huge fanbase in America along with the United Kingdom in recent years due to this fact. There is an Earthbound 2 over in Japan, but sadly the release appears to be doubtful overseas in America or United Kingdom, as for a re-release on VC or SNES it has been doubted that there will not be a re-release due to copyright claims that Nintendo would receive in the U.S. or overseas. I truly hope that Nintendo can find a way just even if it was for one day only, to get the whole Earthbound series out around the world. For the fans like me, or others who are just playing this game for the first time with awe, this is more than a game, it is everything an RPG fan dreams of at night.
Product Review 2.

I’ve consistently played video games for decades now and I can’t think of a single game quite like this one. It is epic in size and scope, pokes fun at itself from time to time, and is just a ton of fun to play. I sold all my games awhile back but letting this one go was one of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made. I’m hoping they’ll re-release it as a download on wii or something, but if that doesn’t happen in a few years I may consider buying it (as much as it sounds crazy to buy a system from the 90’s and a 16 for over $100).

Product Review 1.

pre-order buyer

I pre-ordered this book and had high hopes for it. My hopes were realized. My major desire was to find a good book that I can use in a course
where we will build a game engine using webgl technologies. I would have liked perhaps an additional chapter about webgl, but am quite pleased
with the chapter that is present. Also, the other chapters are informative and helpful, e.g. those describing web sockets, local storage, etc. I
downloaded the software from the publisher website and ran many of the samples. In one case, I had to make a change to the code to accept 0 (zero)
from an xmlhttprequest where the code was only accepting a 200 as a valid return code. Otherwise, things that I tried ran unchanged. At one point I
was confused by a reference to “BC” in the Index. A quick email to the author got an almost immediate reply in which he told me that the acronym
referred to Bonus Content, and that the content would be added to the downloads at the website. He emailed me later when the content was available.
While I will probably provide some websites as supplements to be visited by my students, I am completely satisfied with the book and am currently
planning to use it in my course this summer.

Product Review 2.

Must-read discussion for experienced web/game devs

I’ve now read five titles on HTML5 game development, and while each has their redeeming qualities and high points, Jacob Seidelin’s fine work is an absolute must-have. This isn’t for the novice or beginning dev looking to add a new arrow to their web programming quill – this is a healthy discussion that tackles specific challenges in creating rich, engaging games for the browser environment. Seidelin greatly emphasizes the web’s key advantage of being accessible via browsers on the desktop, smartphones, tablets, and hopefully soon, interactive TVs.
HTML5 Games: Creating Fun with HTML5, CSS3, and WebGL

The book doesn’t spend time discussing game theory and doesn’t go into exhaustive detail with APIs for canvas and multimedia, it states the objective in building a puzzle game and then attacks the problem by building-out each of the components and subsystems. Each chapter is very logically-organized and well-written, neither too short nor not overly verbose. It leverages techniques for multiplayer games like Web Sockets and Web Workers and uses slick techniques to take advantage of local storage for a real console feel. The animation and WebGL chapters are very much appreciated, too.

But the book’s finest hour is its hearty chapter dealing with the nuances of mobile games for iOS and Android. This chapter is essential reading, featuring material not found in wide distribution with most titles out there at the moment.

While I’m not a big fan of books using third-party libraries in their examples ([…]), Seidelin does leverage Modernizr and Sizzle, the DOM access library that’s not as top-heavy as jQuery. In so doing is uses clever JavaScript programming idioms and patterns that are very worth considering for your next project.
HTML5 Games: Creating Fun with HTML5, CSS3, and WebGL

This book is so good, I’d recommend owning it AS A BOOK. With maybe an electronic
copy as a backup.

Product Review 3.

The one we’ve all been waiting for!

Beyond this point is my original review of “HTML5 Games: Creating Fun with HTML5, CSS3, and WebGL.” Please note that the content below was written prior to completing “Chapter 10: Creating Audio for Games.” I will complete this review once I have gone through the rest of the book.)
HTML5 Games: Creating Fun with HTML5, CSS3, and WebGL

When I first heard Jacob Seidelin (the mastermind behind the NihiLogic Web site and the famous “HTML5 Canvas Cheat Sheet”) was working on a book that was to cover game development using HTML5, I got excited. The current crop of HTML5 game programming books is, to put it bluntly, quite underwhelming. However, I knew if the book Mr. Seidelin was working on is near the caliber of the content on his Web site — I’d be in for a real treat.

The book, “HTML5 Games: Creating Fun with HTML5, CSS3, and WebGL,” meets my expectations.
HTML5 Games: Creating Fun with HTML5, CSS3, and WebGL

In Part 1 of the book, you start out by learning a bit about the history of HTML5, and gaining some ideas about how HTML5 can be used for gaming. In Chapter 2, after a primer on the game you will be building (a puzzle game along the lines of “Jewel Quest”), you get to the nitty-gritty and start the HTML/CSS files (along with a few scripts) necessary for the game — including coverage of Web Fonts.

Part 1 concludes with a chapter on techniques to help your project translate well on mobile devices. This chapter is a gold-mine of tips and tricks that will get you going if you want your games to work well on Apple mobile devices and Android systems.
HTML5 Games: Creating Fun with HTML5, CSS3, and WebGL

Then, in “Part 2”, you get into the thick of it. Chapter 4 has you build the game-board module, including move-validation (so that one cannot make illegal moves), finding sets-of-three, and clearing/refilling the game board. Chapter 5 covers Web Workers, and does so well — Mr. Seidelin does a good job of explaining why workers can be helpful, and in what situations they perform (or don’t perform) well.

In Chapter 6, you will be introduced to Canvas — the scriptable graphics element introduced in HTML5. Everything is covered — shapes/paths, transformation/scaling/rotation, rendering text and images, and real-time rendering (such as shadows, and my personal favorite — compositing). Chapter 7 extends the game by showing you how to pre-load game assets (and display a progress bar in the meantime), and adding a “fallback” rendering method using CSS sprites and the DOM to control the game view.
HTML5 Games: Creating Fun with HTML5, CSS3, and WebGL

Chapter 8 covers input. In addition to mouse and keyboard input, Jacob will explain to you how touch events work on devices with touch screens, and how to interpret them in the game. Chapter 9 covers animating the game, and includes a handy “fallback” script that imitates the functionality of requestAnimationFrame() for browsers without support for the function built-in.

Part 3 (which I have not delved into — yet) covers the Audio element in Chapter 10, whereas Chapter 11 will guide you through adding WebGL rendering to the game project.

Part 4 covers more of the advanced functions introduced in HTML5, such as Local Storage and WebSockets. The book winds down in Chapter 14 with a list of resources — everything from external libraries (Box2D, Impact, and Three are covered), to app deployment/sales (for both desktop and mobile devices), and so on.

In summary, this book is pretty much going to take you from 0 to 60 in about 430 pages. Jacob has a really great writing style, in that he explains things very well without being overly verbose — he says a lot by saying a little. This makes it much ea
sier to grasp even difficult concepts. His use of modules such as Modernizr and Sizzle is, in my opinion, a good thing (jQuery is more popular, but would add a bit of unnecessary bloat, unfortunately). I’m really impressed with the editing — I have only come across one instance of mangled code, and it is minor. (I had the error marked and planned to point it out; unfortunately, the marker I used fell out of the book…)

One caveat — there is some serious JavaScript-Fu going on in this book. If you are not at least somewhat comfortable with JavaScript and how it works under the hood, prepare to be schooled.

“HTML5 Games: Creating Fun with HTML5, CSS3, and WebGL” by Jacob Seidelin gets five well-deserved stars from me.
